About
I’m a traveler. I’ve been traveling my whole life, from the time my parents drove my sisters and me in a chevy station wagon from Iowa to Tikal, Guatemala and back in 1973. We ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on the side of beat up roads and changed more than a few tires along the way. It was then I realized that traveling is about the journey and not the destination. Traveling is really a state of mind.
Since that ride to Tikal, I have married, gone to law school, held responsible legal positions, raised three children, done countless hours of volunteer work, and never stopped traveling, even when it was easier not to. For all sorts of reasons, it’s hard to pack up a family for an adventure. But, my husband and I always made traveling a priority. And it still is; but I just want to do more than the rest of my gang. Traveling is my obsession. And more than that, I like to teach others how to travel. Or, at least awaken in others the possibility of becoming a traveler. For that reason, I created this website.
Waltzing Matilda evokes images of southern skies and rugged journeys, sleeping under the stars by a billabong. But, for me, the song also has a genteel quality (particularly when sung by the Australian Boys Choir). Traveling doesn’t always have to be rugged. To a certain extent, the manner of travel is a matter of preference – as long as it doesn’t get in the way of the journey.
With this website, I invite you to come a Waltzing Matilda with me. My 10 year old daughter, Ellie, and I are sallying forth to southeast Asia in January, February, and March. (Yes, I’m simply taking her out of school.) Along the way, I hope to share some of this journey and many more to come.
